Clan Matches Suspended

It is with regret that we have to suspend the Clan Matches for the next few weeks. Crunch time is in progress as Medal of Honor Pacific Assault nears completion and the team will be unavailable to participate in these events.

Once the game is released, however, we look forward to resuming Clan Matches in Medal of Honor Pacific Assault, so if you haven't pre-ordered the game, do so before you get left behind.

June 21, 1945 - US troops take Okinawa

After a long and violent battle, the Japanese island of Okinawa has fallen to the United States. In this 82-day conflict, it's estimated that more that 90,000 Japanese troops were killed. However, this pales in comparison to the 33,000 US troops that were killed or wounded.

June 4-6, 1942 - Battle of Midway

The Battle of Midway is often referred to as the turning point in the Pacific War. Prior to this conflict, Japan possessed naval supriority over the United States allowing them to easily dictate when and where to attack. However, after this decisive battle, the naval might of the United States quickly became on par with Japan eventually allowing the US to take the offensive.

Today in Wary History

May 7-8, 1942 - Battle of Coral Sea

The Battle of the Coral Sea, fought in the waters southwest of the Solomon Islands and eastward from New Guinea, was the first of the Pacific War's six fights between opposing aircraft carrier forces.

Though the Japanese could rightly claim a tactical victory on "points", it was an operational and strategic defeat for them, the first major check on the great offensive they had begun five months earlier at Pearl Harbor. The diversion of Japanese resources represented by the Coral Sea battle would also have immense consequences a month later, at the Battle of Midway.

To learn more about this skirmish, visit the Naval Historical Center.

May 6, 1942 - Corregidor Island

Corregidor is a small rocky island in the Philippines about 48 kilometers west of Manila which is stragetically located at the entrance of Manila Bay. This island fortress stands as a memorial for the courage, valor, and heroism of its Filipino and American defenders who bravely held their ground against the overwhelming number of invading Japanese forces during World War II.

Today in War History

March 2-4, 1943 - Battle of Bismark Sea

The Battle of Bismark Sea, off coast of New Guinea, is where American B-25 Mitchell bombers rigged with 11 forward-facing .50-caliber machine guns, for the first time used a "skip bombing" technique. This new technique sunk 13 Japanese merchant vessels and 7 Japanese destroyers, taking 15,000 Japanese lives, at a cost of American 13 dead and 12 wounded.

The Battle validated the skip bombing technique, which became the primary American method of destroying convoys in the Pacific. American General MacArthur was later quoted as calling this method "a magnificant victory [which] cannot fail to go down in history as one of the most complete and annihilating combats of all time."

Today in War History

February 19, 1945 - Iwo Jima

Shortly before 2am on Feb. 19, 1945, the Navy's big guns opened up on Iwo Jima again, signaling the beginning of D-Day. After an hour of punishment, the fire was lifted, leaving Iwo smoking as if the entire island were on fire.

Both Americans aboard their transports and the Japanese in their caves looked to the skies now. One-hundred-ten bombers screamed out of the sky to drop more bombs. After the planes left, the big guns of the Navy opened up again.

At 8:30am, the order, "Land the Landing Force," sent the first wave of Marines towards the deadly shores. Once ashore, the Marines were bedeviled by the loose volcanic ash. Unable to dig foxholes, they were sitting ducks for the hidden Japanese gunners.

Heavy fire made it impossible to land men in an orderly manner. Confusion reigned on the beaches.

The battle was unique in its setting. One hundred thousand men fighting on a tiny island one-third the size of Manhattan. for 36 days Iwo Jima was one of the most populated 7.5 miles on earth.
