Mr. DEVLIN of Virginia submits, for Mr. BOLAND, Mr. CHERRY, Mr. COLE, Mr. COLLINS, Mr. ELLISON, Mr. GARWOOD, Mr. HEORTMAN, Mr. JOHNS, Mr. PREGLER, Mr. MARTINEZ, Mr. MERS, Mr. OUSLEY, Mr. SMITH, Mr. SPITZEN, Mr. THAYNER, Mr. TROUTMAN, Mr. VANDERBERG, Mr. WILDER, Mr. WISNIEWSKI, and himself, the following bill, to be referred to the comittee on International Relations and Armed Services.

---------------------------------------
IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

A BILL

To amend Title 10, United States Code, to ensure that no future US Navy vessel bears the name "USS Arizona."

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE

This bill may be cited as the 'USS Arizona Name Retirement Act of 2004'.

SECTION 2. FINDINGS

The Congress finds the following:

(1) The last of the three United States Navy vessels to bear the name "USS Arizona" was destroyed in battle on December 7th, 1941, with the loss of 1103 officers and men.

(2) The destruction of the USS Arizona (BB-39) has become emblematic in the minds of the American people of our nation's indomitable spirit and of its justified involvement on the side of the Allies during the Second World War.

(3) The official retirement of the name "USS Arizona" is a fitting memorial to the American fighting men and women of the Navy and Marine Corps who gave their lives in the Pacific Theater during the Second World War.

SECTION 3. USS ARIZONA NAME RETIREMENT

Subsection 7292 (, of Title 10, United States Code, is amended to read--

"Each battleship shall be named for a State. However, no vessel of any displacement bought for the Navy shall be named "Arizona." If the names of all the States, Arizona notwithstanding, are in use, a battleship may be named for a city, place, or person."

SECTION 4. EFFECTIVE DATE

This act shall take effect immediately upon enactment.

Mr Chair,

The Title 10 USC subsection referred to in section 3 of this bill is 7292 "B."
...It looks like it got erased when it was forwarded to committee.

I yield.

Mr. Chair,

Like my colleague from California, I see no reason to vote against this bill, which is why in the interests of time, I motion for Unanimous Consent.

I yield.
